Thursday, June 18 @ 6 p.m, Maribor Art Gallery

Alongside the retrospective exhibition of Mirko Ilić, Maribor Art Gallery is preparing a lecture on political illustration. By comparing covers of different weekly newspapers and leaning also on Ilić's work, dr. Božidar Flajšman and his guests will be exploring the creation and impact of illustration in the context of political communication and propaganda.

Free entrance!

A good, to-the-point political illustration can often say much more much more clearly than the text. It can be as fleeting as an article or it can, if it's message is relevant in different historical and cultural periods, become a cult with a universal message. Through a historical overview and contextualisation of Danas (Croatia) and Mladina (Slovenia) weekly covers, dr. Božidar Flajšman will explore the state and condition of contemporary political visual communication in Slovenia, Europe and in the US. He will reminisce of the visualisation of political and public issues alongside the retrospective exhibition of Mirko Ilić who was and still is one of the sharpest, most merciless commentators of the political world. Among other subjects, dr. Flajšman will address the question of turning a word into a sign and how a sign can replace a word in political communication. The lecture will be followed by an open discussion.
